Rinnai Error Code 12: Flame Failure
In Rinnai systems, Error Code 12 indicates a Flame Failure. This means your unit is trying to ignite to produce hot water, but it either cannot establish a flame, or the flame is going out almost immediately after igniting.
Because this involves gas and combustion, the system shuts itself down to keep you safe.
Here are the most common causes and how to address them:
Basic Checks (Safe to do yourself):

Check the Gas Supply: Ensure the manual gas valve connected to your water heater is turned to the fully open position.

Check Other Appliances: Turn on your gas stove or another gas appliance in the house. If they aren’t working either, your gas service might be interrupted, or your propane tank might be empty.

Inspect the Venting: Go outside and look at the exhaust and intake pipes. Make sure they are not blocked by leaves, debris, bird nests, or heavy snow.
Internal Issues (Requires a licensed professional):

Dirty Flame Rod: This is by far the most common culprit. Over time, the internal sensor gets coated in carbon build-up. If it gets too dirty, it cannot detect the flame and shuts the gas off as a safety precaution.

Faulty Igniter: The internal component responsible for creating the spark may be broken or have a loose wire.

Low Gas Pressure: The gas pressure reaching the unit might be insufficient to maintain combustion.

PC Board Issues: There could be a loose connection on the main computer board inside the unit.
How to Reset It:
Sometimes a temporary draft or hiccup can trigger the code. You can attempt a reset by turning the remote controller off and then back on, or by unplugging the unit from the wall for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
If you reset it and Error Code 12 immediately comes back, you will need to call a certified plumber or HVAC technician to open the unit, clean the flame rod, and verify the gas pressures.
