www nzta.govt.nz/online : How do I change ownership of a car online NZ?

The easiest way to change ownership of a car  in New Zealand is online and on the spot. Both buyers and sellers can use online services on the Waka Kotahi website www nzta.govt.nz/online to notify a change of registered person.

You must notify Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency of your purchase as soon as possible. Do this within seven days to avoid fines or infringements.

If you have bought a new car or a vehicle imported to New Zealand for the first time, you must register the vehicle. NZ Transport Agency will then issue the vehicle number plates and add it to the Motor Vehicle database.

Once you have changed ownership or registered the vehicle, you will receive a Certificate of Registration in your name. Keep this document in a safe place.

Renewing your licence

For most people, your driver licence is valid for 10 years. Waka Kotahi NZ send you a renewal reminder letter about 8 weeks before your photo driver licence is due to expire (provided we have your current address on our system).

The renewal process

In most cases it takes less than 10 minutes to renew your licence.

To renew your licence, you must apply at a driver licensing agent.

You will need to:

  • fill out an application form [PDF, 204 KB]
  • present evidence of your identity
  • prove your eyesight meets the required standard
  • provide a medical certificate (if required)
  • let the agent take your photo and signature
  • pay the renewal application fee.

You’ll then receive a temporary licence which is valid for 21 days. Keep this on you whenever you’re driving until your new driver licence arrives in the mail – within 2 to 3 weeks.

Renewal fees

Most licences will be issued for 10 years and cost $32.40.

If you’re aged 641/2 or over, your licence will be issued for less than the standard term and will expire on your 75th birthday. In this case, you’ll pay a lower fee.
