Renewing your licence online costs £14. You can pay by MasterCard, Visa, Electron or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70. Your licence should arrive within one week if you apply online.

Here’s how to renew your driving license in the UK if you’re 70 or over:

1. Check if you need to renew:

  • Your driving license automatically expires when you turn 70.
  • You’ll need to renew it every 3 years after that to keep driving legally.

2. The DVLA will send you a reminder:

  • The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) will usually send you a reminder letter and a D46P application form about 90 days before your license is due to expire.

3. Renew online (recommended):

  • This is the easiest and fastest way to renew.
  • Go to the GOV.UK website: https://www.gov.uk/renew-driving-licence
  • Follow the step-by-step instructions to complete the online form.
  • You’ll need to provide your National Insurance number, address history, and a valid UK passport number if you want to change your photo.
  • Your new license will arrive within a week.

4. Renew by post:

  • If you don’t want to renew online, you can use the D46P form that the DVLA sent you.
  • Fill it out carefully and return it to the DVLA along with the required documents (your current photocard driving license and a new passport-sized photo if needed).
  • It takes up to 3 weeks for your new license to arrive by post.
