Here\u2019s what\u2019s going on and what you should do.<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr data-start=\"208\" data-end=\"211\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"213\" data-end=\"245\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\">\u2705 What the scam looks like<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"272\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Common features include:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"1661\">\n<li data-start=\"273\" data-end=\"813\">\n<h3 data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"338\">You receive a voicemail (or live call) saying something like:<\/h3>\n<blockquote data-start=\"341\" data-end=\"813\">\n<p data-start=\"343\" data-end=\"813\">\u201cHi, this is Jessica from US\u202fTax\u202fConsultants. Today is [date]. I\u2019m following up on the notice we sent out regarding your back taxes and missed filings for the account linked to [your phone number]. This may be our only attempt to reach you \u2026 please call us right away at 833\u2011714\u20114412 \u2026 we can bring your extensions current, request penalty waivers, and review new relief programs that could reduce or even eliminate what you owe\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"1058\">\n<p data-start=\"816\" data-end=\"1058\">The company name is generic\u2011sounding (\u201cUS Tax Consultants\u201d, \u201cUS\u202fTax\u202fRelief\u201d, etc) and claims to offer urgent help with \u201cback taxes\u201d or \u201cmissed filings\u201d even when you never received any letter or notice.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1216\">\n<p data-start=\"1061\" data-end=\"1216\">They instruct you <strong data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"1106\">not to make any payment<\/strong> or speak to anyone else until you call <em data-start=\"1146\" data-end=\"1152\">them<\/em>. The scammers often rotate numbers but blocking helps.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2579\" data-end=\"2789\">\n<p data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2789\"><strong data-start=\"2581\" data-end=\"2616\">Verify your tax status directly<\/strong> via official channels: If you\u2019re in the U.S., you can check your account with the IRS or contact them via their known official number, not the number given by the caller.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2790\" data-end=\"3048\">\n<p data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"2812\"><strong data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"2811\">Report the call<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"3048\">\n<li data-start=\"2815\" data-end=\"2907\">\n<p data-start=\"2817\" data-end=\"2907\">To the IRS: Use their \u201cImpersonation Scam\u201d page.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"2973\">\n<p data-start=\"2912\" data-end=\"2973\">To the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) if you\u2019re in the U.S.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2976\" data-end=\"3048\">\n<p data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"3048\">To your phone carrier (some carriers allow you to report spam calls)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3049\" data-end=\"3258\">\n<p data-start=\"3051\" data-end=\"3258\"><strong data-start=\"3051\" data-end=\"3085\">Stay calm &amp; don\u2019t be pressured<\/strong>.
