The Shunammite Woman\u2019s Land Restored (2 Kings 8:1\u20136)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"290\" data-end=\"854\">Elisha tells the Shunammite woman (whose son he had previously raised from the dead) to leave Israel and live elsewhere because of a coming seven-year famine. She obeys and settles in the land of the Philistines. When she returns after seven years to reclaim her land, she appeals to the king. Gehazi (Elisha\u2019s servant) is telling the king about Elisha\u2019s miracles, including the resurrection of her son, just as she arrives. The king, impressed by the timing and the story, orders that her land be restored along with the income it had produced during her absence.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"856\" data-end=\"859\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"939\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong data-start=\"865\" data-end=\"939\">2. The king sends Hazael to ask Elisha if he will recover. Elisha tells Hazael that the king will recover but will still die. Then Elisha weeps, foreseeing the terrible things Hazael will do to Israel. Hazael returns to Ben-Hadad and tells him he will recover, but the next day, Hazael kills the king and becomes king of Syria.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1332\" data-end=\"1335\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1389\"><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1389\">3. God sometimes uses natural events like famine as judgment or a means to direct people. Elisha, as a prophet, gives her a way to prepare.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"939\"><strong data-start=\"627\" data-end=\"639\">Verse 2:<\/strong><br data-start=\"639\" data-end=\"642\" \/><em data-start=\"642\" data-end=\"799\">\u201cSo the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"802\" \/>\u2014 She obeys immediately, showing faith in the prophet\u2019s word, and settles temporarily among Israel&#8217;s historical enemies, the Philistines.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1237\"><strong data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"953\">Verse 3:<\/strong><br data-start=\"953\" data-end=\"956\" \/><em data-start=\"956\" data-end=\"1111\">\u201cAnd at the end of the seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to appeal to the king for her house and her land.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"1111\" data-end=\"1114\" \/>\u2014 Upon returning, she finds her land taken, likely seized by squatters or the government. She appeals directly to the king.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1591\"><strong data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1251\">Verse 4:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1251\" data-end=\"1254\" \/><em data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1386\">\u201cNow the king was talking with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, \u2018Tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1389\" \/>\u2014 Gehazi, formerly Elisha\u2019s servant (notably struck with leprosy in 2 Kings 5), is recounting Elisha\u2019s miracles. It\u2019s debated whether this is out of chronological order or a sign of his restored status.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1952\"><strong data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1605\">Verse 5:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1605\" data-end=\"1608\" \/><em data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1790\">\u201cAnd while he was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and her land&#8230;\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1793\" \/>\u2014 A providential moment: Just as Gehazi recounts the resurrection, the very woman appears. This &#8220;divine coincidence&#8221; underscores God&#8217;s hand in her restoration.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"2360\"><strong data-start=\"1954\" data-end=\"1966\">Verse 6:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1966\" data-end=\"1969\" \/><em data-start=\"1969\" data-end=\"2192\">\u201cAnd when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed an official for her, saying, \u2018Restore all that was hers, together with all the produce of the fields from the day that she left the land until now.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2192\" data-end=\"2195\" \/>\u2014 The king is moved to act justly. Not only is her land restored, but also the profits lost over seven years\u2014possibly a rare act of grace by a typically wicked king.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2362\" data-end=\"2365\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2367\" data-end=\"2426\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2426\">Verses 7\u201315: Elisha Predicts Hazael\u2019s Rise in Syria<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2653\"><strong data-start=\"2428\" data-end=\"2440\">Verse 7:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2440\" data-end=\"2443\" \/><em data-start=\"2443\" data-end=\"2515\">\u201cNow Elisha came to Damascus. Ben-hadad the king of Syria was sick&#8230;\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2515\" data-end=\"2518\" \/>\u2014 Elisha\u2019s presence in a foreign land (Damascus, capital of Syria) shows the scope of his influence. Even Israel&#8217;s enemies respect him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2655\" data-end=\"2952\"><strong data-start=\"2655\" data-end=\"2667\">Verse 8:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2667\" data-end=\"2670\" \/><em data-start=\"2670\" data-end=\"2757\">\u201cThe king said to Hazael, \u2018Take a present&#8230; and inquire of the Lord through him&#8230;\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2757\" data-end=\"2760\" \/>\u2014 Ben-hadad sends Hazael (his court official) to inquire about his illness. Interestingly, he wants a prophecy from Israel&#8217;s God, suggesting a level of desperation or belief in Elisha\u2019s power.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"3137\"><strong data-start=\"2954\" data-end=\"2966\">Verse 9:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2966\" data-end=\"2969\" \/><em data-start=\"2969\" data-end=\"3031\">\u201cSo Hazael went to meet him, and took a present with him&#8230;\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"3031\" data-end=\"3034\" \/>\u2014 Hazael brings 40 camels\u2019 loads\u2014a lavish gift, showing the king\u2019s seriousness and Elisha\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3139\" data-end=\"3396\"><strong data-start=\"3139\" data-end=\"3152\">Verse 10:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3155\" \/><em data-start=\"3155\" data-end=\"3282\">\u201cAnd Elisha said to him, \u2018Say to him, &#8220;You shall certainly recover,&#8221; but the Lord has shown me that he shall certainly die.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"3282\" data-end=\"3285\" \/>\u2014 A mysterious, paradoxical statement: the illness isn&#8217;t fatal, but Ben-hadad will still die\u2014hinting at murder.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3398\" data-end=\"3661\"><strong data-start=\"3398\" data-end=\"3411\">Verse 11:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3411\" data-end=\"3414\" \/><em data-start=\"3414\" data-end=\"3509\">\u201cAnd he fixed his gaze and stared at him, until he was embarrassed. And the man of God wept.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"3509\" data-end=\"3512\" \/>\u2014 Elisha foresees Hazael&#8217;s rise and the horrific acts he will commit. The prophet is emotionally moved, reflecting God&#8217;s compassion even in judgment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3944\"><strong data-start=\"3663\" data-end=\"3676\">Verse 12:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3676\" data-end=\"3679\" \/><em data-start=\"3679\" data-end=\"3798\">\u201cAnd Hazael said, \u2018Why does my lord weep?\u2019 &#8230; \u2018Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel&#8230;\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"3798\" data-end=\"3801\" \/>\u2014 Elisha prophesies Hazael\u2019s brutal campaigns against Israel: killing children, dashing infants, ripping open pregnant women\u2014tragic war crimes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"4184\"><strong data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"3959\">Verse 13:<\/strong><br data-start=\"3959\" data-end=\"3962\" \/><em data-start=\"3962\" data-end=\"4063\">\u201cAnd Hazael said, \u2018What is your servant, who is but a dog, that he should do this great thing?\u2019&#8230;\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"4063\" data-end=\"4066\" \/>\u2014 Hazael expresses false humility or disbelief. The phrase &#8220;great thing&#8221; refers to rising as king, not the atrocities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4186\" data-end=\"4365\"><strong data-start=\"4186\" data-end=\"4199\">Verse 14:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4199\" data-end=\"4202\" \/><em data-start=\"4202\" data-end=\"4286\">\u201cThen he departed&#8230; and told him, \u2018He told me that you would certainly recover.\u2019\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"4286\" data-end=\"4289\" \/>\u2014 Hazael selectively reports Elisha\u2019s words, omitting the prophecy of death.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4367\" data-end=\"4604\"><strong data-start=\"4367\" data-end=\"4380\">Verse 15:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4380\" data-end=\"4383\" \/><em data-start=\"4383\" data-end=\"4527\">\u201cBut the next day he took the bedcloth and dipped it in water and spread it over his face, till he died. And Hazael became king in his place.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"4527\" data-end=\"4530\" \/>\u2014 Hazael murders Ben-hadad and usurps the throne, fulfilling the prophecy.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"4606\" data-end=\"4609\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"4611\" data-end=\"4656\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong data-start=\"4615\" data-end=\"4656\">Verses 16\u201324: Jehoram Reigns in Judah<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4658\" data-end=\"4813\"><strong data-start=\"4658\" data-end=\"4671\">Verse 16:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4671\" data-end=\"4674\" \/>\u2014 Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, begins to reign over Judah, overlapping with Joram of Israel (same names, different kings\u2014can be confusing).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4815\" data-end=\"4889\"><strong data-start=\"4815\" data-end=\"4828\">Verse 17:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4828\" data-end=\"4831\" \/>\u2014 Jehoram is 32 when he begins to reign and rules 8 years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4891\" data-end=\"5055\"><strong data-start=\"4891\" data-end=\"4904\">Verse 18:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4904\" data-end=\"4907\" \/>\u2014 He walks in the ways of the kings of Israel\u2014evil behavior\u2014because he marries Ahab\u2019s daughter (Athaliah). This alliance brings idolatry into Judah.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5057\" data-end=\"5218\"><strong data-start=\"5057\" data-end=\"5070\">Verse 19:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5070\" data-end=\"5073\" \/>\u2014 Despite Jehoram\u2019s wickedness, God does not destroy Judah because of His covenant with David. God remains faithful even when His people are not.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5220\" data-end=\"5413\"><strong data-start=\"5220\" data-end=\"5237\">Verses 20\u201322:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5237\" data-end=\"5240\" \/>\u2014 Edom, a subject nation under Judah, rebels. Jehoram tries to suppress it but fails. Libnah also rebels. These events show Judah\u2019s declining power under an unfaithful king.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5415\" data-end=\"5546\"><strong data-start=\"5415\" data-end=\"5428\">Verse 23:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5428\" data-end=\"5431\" \/>\u2014 Summary of Jehoram\u2019s acts (not detailed here) are recorded in the &#8220;Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5548\" data-end=\"5663\"><strong data-start=\"5548\" data-end=\"5561\">Verse 24:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5561\" data-end=\"5564\" \/>\u2014 Jehoram dies and is buried in the city of David, but not in the royal tombs\u2014an implicit dishonor.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5665\" data-end=\"5668\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"5670\" data-end=\"5715\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong data-start=\"5674\" data-end=\"5715\">Verses 25\u201329: Ahaziah Reigns in Judah<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5717\" data-end=\"5862\"><strong data-start=\"5717\" data-end=\"5730\">Verse 25:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5730\" data-end=\"5733\" \/>\u2014 Ahaziah, Jehoram\u2019s son, becomes king of Judah during Joram\u2019s reign in Israel. He\u2019s part of the Ahab dynasty through his mother.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5864\" data-end=\"5972\"><strong data-start=\"5864\" data-end=\"5877\">Verse 26:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5877\" data-end=\"5880\" \/>\u2014 He\u2019s 22 and reigns just 1 year. His mother, Athaliah, is the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5974\" data-end=\"6075\"><strong data-start=\"5974\" data-end=\"5987\">Verse 27:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5987\" data-end=\"5990\" \/>\u2014 Ahaziah walks in the evil ways of Ahab\u2019s house, furthering the corruption of Judah.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6077\" data-end=\"6201\"><strong data-start=\"6077\" data-end=\"6090\">Verse 28:<\/strong><br data-start=\"6090\" data-end=\"6093\" \/>\u2014 He allies with Joram of Israel in a battle against Syria at Ramoth-gilead. Joram is wounded in the battle.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6203\" data-end=\"6380\"><strong data-start=\"6203\" data-end=\"6216\">Verse 29:<\/strong><br data-start=\"6216\" data-end=\"6219\" \/>\u2014 Joram retreats to Jezreel to recover, and Ahaziah goes to visit him.
