What is a Comprehensive car insurance?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are a few different types of insurance available for automobiles: Basic liability, collision, liability and collision, and comprehensive.<\/p>\n

In California, the law requires you carry basic liability insurance in case you cause damage to another vehicle or someone else\u2019s property, and are at fault for the accident. If you do not have this type of insurance on your car and are pulled over by the police, you will get cited and be forced to either leave your car where it is parked on the side of the road until you can come back for it, or leave it to be towed by a company under contract with the police. You can\u2019t even let a third party come pick it up, because it is not legally insured for driving on the street.<\/p>\n

If you have collision, you will be covered for damage to your vehicle and whatever you hit. You can purchase this at varying levels of coverage, so if you are covered for $3000 in damage, your carrier will pay a maximum of $3000, and first payout goes to the other party, so you may be stuck with a high repair bill anyway. You get paid first if the other party was actually the one at fault. In any event, the higher the covered amount, the less likely you are to have to pay anything out of pocket beyond your deductible. In conjunction with liability, there may be more coverage for damage to people (medical bills), although it still may not amount to much.<\/p>\n
