There are a number of ways this can happen:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You could have your own automobile insurance policy on your own vehicle and be listed as a driver on your father\u2019s automobile policy. If you reside in the same household as your father and have your own vehicle this is most definitely the case, as insurers insist on knowing all licensed drivers in a household and assume all licensed drivers will operate the vehicle to some extent. Most automobile insurance policies define insured person as the owner of the vehicle, their spouse, any dependent children (or other persons sometimes) residing in the same residence, and any person with lawful possession of the vehicle. You having your own vehicle and your own automobile insurance policy doesn\u2019t matter at all in terms of whether or not you fall under the definition of insured person on your father\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 You could have a \u201cdriver\u2019s policy\u201d and still be listed on your father\u2019s \u201cowner\u2019s policy.\u201d Most people who own vehicles have an owner\u2019s policy which is meant to protect the owner of the vehicle from their liability and vicarious liability that they are exposed to due to the actions of persons they allow to operate the described vehicle. An owner\u2019s policy essentially follows the vehicle, providing protection to whomever is operating the vehicle. In addition, many owner\u2019s policies also insure the named insured while operating other vehicles too (but as an excess liability policy). Driver\u2019s policies are specific to the driver. If there is an owner\u2019s policy in place for the vehicle that the person insured under a driver\u2019s policy is operating then the driver\u2019s policy acts as excess insurance.<\/p>\n<p>If you had a driver\u2019s policy and were operating your father\u2019s vehicle then you would be insured under your father\u2019s policy as a person in lawful possession of the vehicle and insured under your own driver\u2019s policy (although your policy would only start paying any damages once the limits of your father\u2019s policy were exceeded).<\/p>\n<p class=\"q-text qu-display--block\">The above are the most common ways that you could be listed on your father\u2019s insurance and have your own automobile insurance as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can I have my own auto insurance and still be on my dad\u2019s auto insurance?
