The OS is removed and reinstalled during recovery. With an internet connection, you can restore the operating system on newer Chromebooks. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It may not be feasible to recover from previous Chromebooks and upgrades might not be supported either.<\/p>\n<p>Make note that recovery will delete all data from your Chromebook&#8217;s hard disc, including any files you may have downloaded. Do a backup of your files before attempting to restore your Chromebook, if at all feasible.<\/p>\n<p>If you need assistance with your Chromebook while at school or work, consult with an administrator. Let go of Power.<\/li>\n<li>When a message shows on the screen, let go of the other keys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chromebox<\/strong>: First, turn it off. With\u00a0a paper clip or similar object, press and hold the\u00a0recovery button. Press the Power button to turn the Chromebox back on. When you see a message on screen, release the recovery button.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chromebit<\/strong>: First, unplug it from power. With\u00a0a paper clip or similar object, press and hold the\u00a0recovery button. Plug the Chromebit back in to power. When you see a message on screen, release the recovery button.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chromebook tablet<\/strong>: Press and hold the\u00a0<strong>Volume Up<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Volume Down<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Power<\/strong>\u00a0buttons for at least 10 seconds, then release them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Recovery option 1: Use the Internet<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On your Chromebook, select\u00a0<strong>Recover using internet connection<\/strong>\u00a0and follow the on-screen instructions. Shortly after you complete the instructions, your computer automatically restarts to complete recovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong>\u00a0If you decide to choose a different recovery method at any point while you work on the instructions, press and hold\u00a0<strong>Esc<\/strong>\u00a0+ Refresh\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3XKnstOuiq5G1zw_fiVWq18N1Q5nBcmrj9-Yqq5hYeFnD7XkMAWpAwBo12CpF098UJc=w36-h36\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" data-alt-src=\"\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3XKnstOuiq5G1zw_fiVWq18N1Q5nBcmrj9-Yqq5hYeFnD7XkMAWpAwBo12CpF098UJc\" \/>, then press Power\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/kAHr8vumwhvtDC2Hym0l6uYOS4noMZmy0I4VPBqehXM93XkSJtkz4P0RE-BOs8hoZA=w36\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"auto\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" data-alt-src=\"\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/kAHr8vumwhvtDC2Hym0l6uYOS4noMZmy0I4VPBqehXM93XkSJtkz4P0RE-BOs8hoZA\" \/>.<\/p>\n<p>If your computer doesn&#8217;t have internet access or the option to recover with the internet doesn&#8217;t appear, you may be on an older Chromebook that doesn\u2019t support this feature. Continue to &#8220;Recovery option 2: Use USB drive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Recovery option 2: Use USB drive<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"zippy-container\"><a class=\"zippy index1 goog-zippy-expanded\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-sc-zippy-id=\"step-collect-these-devices\" aria-expanded=\"true\" data-stats-ve=\"2\" data-stats-imp=\"\" data-stats-idx=\"1,11\" data-stats-ignore=\"\">Step 1: Collect these devices<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"zippy-overflow\">\n<div class=\"zippy-content\">\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Chromebook with the &#8220;ChromeOS\u00a0is missing or damaged&#8221; error<\/li>\n<li>Another Chromebook, or a Windows or Mac computer with Chrome installed<\/li>\n<li>A USB flash drive that can hold at least 8 GB, and that you don&#8217;t mind erasing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"zippy-container\"><a class=\"zippy index2 goog-zippy-expanded\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-sc-zippy-id=\"step-download-a-new-copy-of-the-os\" aria-expanded=\"true\" data-stats-ve=\"2\" data-stats-imp=\"\" data-stats-idx=\"2,11\" data-stats-ignore=\"\">Step 2: Download a new copy of the OS<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"zippy-overflow\">\n<div class=\"zippy-content\">\n<div>\n<p>On the working computer, not the Chromebook with the error:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using a Mac or Windows computer:\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\/browser\/desktop\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Install Chrome<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Open Chrome\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/support-kms-prod\/Y57p9LEW3v1cnw4Svh3a53DOnyRPFkiDfTDc\" alt=\"Chrome\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>Install the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/chromebook-recovery-utili\/pocpnlppkickgojjlmhdmidojbmbodfm?authuser=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recovery extension<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>To open the recovery extension:\n<ol>\n<li>At the top right of your browser window, click Extensions\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/5nlvcUtFevZLAkSJALBl5Fa8thP_-mGFnUngJLuAFzt0jws-Lr09I9mIfawW4vKiT6k=w36-h36\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" data-alt-src=\"\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/5nlvcUtFevZLAkSJALBl5Fa8thP_-mGFnUngJLuAFzt0jws-Lr09I9mIfawW4vKiT6k\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>Select the\u00a0<strong>Chromebook Recovery Utility\u00a0<\/strong>extension. If the extension popup doesn&#8217;t automatically appear on your screen,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chromebook\/answer\/1080595?hl=en#enable\" rel=\"noopener\">make sure it&#8217;s turned on<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Get started<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Select a model from a list<\/strong>, or type in the model number of the Chromebook you want to recover. To find this number, look at the bottom of the error message on your Chromebook screen.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Insert your USB flash drive into the working computer.<\/li>\n<li>In the dropdown menu, choose your USB flash drive.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3_l97rr0GvhSP2XV5OoCkV2ZDTIisAOczrSdzNCBxhIKWrjXjHucxNwocghoUa39gw=w36-h36\" alt=\"and then\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" data-alt-src=\"\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/3_l97rr0GvhSP2XV5OoCkV2ZDTIisAOczrSdzNCBxhIKWrjXjHucxNwocghoUa39gw\" \/>\u00a0<strong>Create now<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>When you get a message that your recovery media is ready, remove your USB flash drive from the computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 class=\"zippy-container\"><a class=\"zippy index3 goog-zippy-expanded\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\" data-sc-zippy-id=\"step-begin-recovery\" aria-expanded=\"true\" data-stats-ve=\"2\" data-stats-imp=\"\" data-stats-idx=\"3,11\" data-stats-ignore=\"\">Step 3: Begin recovery<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"zippy-overflow\">\n<div class=\"zippy-content\">\n<div>\n<p>On the Chromebook with the error, select\u00a0<strong>Recover using external disk<\/strong>\u00a0and follow the on-screen instructions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zippy-container\">\n<div class=\"zippy-container zippy-last zippy-last-focus\">Optional: Reuse your USB flash drive<\/div>\n<div class=\"zippy-overflow\">\n<div class=\"zippy-content\">\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve recovered your Chromebook, you\u2019ll need to erase the recovery media if you want to reuse your USB flash drive to store other files.<\/p>\n<h3>To erase the recovery media:<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>On your computer, open Chrome\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/support-kms-prod\/Y57p9LEW3v1cnw4Svh3a53DOnyRPFkiDfTDc\" alt=\"Chrome\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>At the top right, click Extensions\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/5nlvcUtFevZLAkSJALBl5Fa8thP_-mGFnUngJLuAFzt0jws-Lr09I9mIfawW4vKiT6k=w36-h36\" alt=\"\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" data-mime-type=\"image\/png\" data-alt-src=\"\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/5nlvcUtFevZLAkSJALBl5Fa8thP_-mGFnUngJLuAFzt0jws-Lr09I9mIfawW4vKiT6k\" \/>.<\/li>\n<li>To launch the extension popup, click on the &#8220;Chromebook Recovery Utility&#8221; extension.<\/li>\n<li>In the extension popup, click\u00a0<strong>Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Erase recovery media<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>From the dropdown menu, select the USB drive you&#8217;d like to erase.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the storage device you used for recovery is listed.<\/li>\n<li>Click\u00a0<strong>Erase now<\/strong>.
