To activate Microsoft Authenticator app, Download & install the App to your mobile device. Sign in to your account security dashboard. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify and choose Use an app.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

With this free app, you can sign in to your personal or work\/school Microsoft account without using a password. You\u2019ll use a fingerprint, face recognition, or a PIN for security.<\/p>\n

Why use the Microsoft Authenticator app?<\/span><\/h2>\n

  1. The authenticator app is a secure and convenient way to prove who you are.<\/li>\n
  2. You can use the Authenticator app as a way to sign in if you forget your password.<\/li>\n
  3. You can use the app to back up and restore all your other account credentials.<\/li>\n
  4. You can also use the Microsoft Authenticator to sign in to\u00a0your\u00a0non-Microsoft accounts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    How to set up the Microsoft Authenticator app<\/span><\/h2>\n

    1. Download & install<\/a>\u00a0the Microsoft Authenticator app to your mobile device.<\/li>\n
    2. Sign in to your\u00a0account security dashboard<\/a>.<\/li>\n
    3. Select\u00a0Add a new way to sign in or\u00a0<\/b>verify<\/b>\u00a0and choose\u00a0Use an app<\/b>.<\/li>\n
    4. If you\u2019ve already installed the app, select\u00a0Next<\/b>\u00a0to display a QR code appear on the screen.<\/li>\n
    5. In the authenticator app, select [three dots] then\u00a0+ Add account<\/b>.<\/li>\n
    6. Choose the account type and select Scan a QR code.<\/li>\n
    7. Scan the code shown on the screen in step 4.<\/li>\n
    8. Select\u00a0Finish<\/b>\u00a0on the PC to complete the setup.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Using Authenticator account backup and restore<\/span><\/h2>\n

      The Microsoft Authenticator app backs up your account credentials and related app settings, such as the order of your accounts, to the cloud.<\/p>\n

        To recover your information:<\/p>\n

        1. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device and select\u00a0Begin recovery<\/b>.<\/li>\n
        2. Sign in to your recovery account using the personal Microsoft account you used during the backup process. Your account credentials are recovered to the new device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Where you can’t use security codes, use app passwords<\/span><\/h2>\n

          Some apps (like the mail apps on some phones) or devices (like the Xbox 360) can’t use regular security codes. If you see an \u201cincorrect password\u201d error on an app or device after you turn on two-step verification, but you\u2019re sure your password was correct, that means you’ll need an app password for that app or device.<\/p>\n

          App passwords are only available if you use two-step verification. If you don’t have two-step verification turned on, you won’t see the\u00a0App passwords<\/b>\u00a0section on the\u00a0Additional security options<\/b>\u00a0page.<\/p>\n

          How to create a new app password<\/span><\/h2>\n

          To create a new app password for an app or device, take the following steps. You can repeat these steps to create an app password for as many apps or devices as you need.<\/p>\n

          1. Go to the\u00a0Security basics<\/a>\u00a0page and sign in to\u00a0your Microsoft account.<\/li>\n
          2. Select\u00a0More security options<\/b>.<\/li>\n
          3. Under\u00a0App passwords<\/b>,\u00a0select\u00a0Create a new app password<\/b>. A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.<\/li>\n
