How do I use my Opal card for the first time?<\/span><\/h1>\n

Once you have yours, just add value, then tap on and tap off to travel. You’ll never pay more than the Daily or Weekly caps, no matter how much you travel.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Opal is the smartcard ticketing system used to pay for travel on public transport in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter and the Illawarra. Add value before you travel and tap on and off to pay your fare.<\/p>\n

If you applied for a new or replacement Opal card online or over the phone, you will need to activate it if you added value to the card.<\/p>\n

Once it has arrived in the mail, you can activate it online.<\/p>\n

Activate your Opal card online<\/span><\/h2>\n

  2. Locate your Opal card. You will see an \u2018Activate card\u2019 link over your new card<\/li>\n

    Once you have activated your card, you will need to wait 60 minutes for your balance to become available.<\/p>\n

    You then need to tap on at an Opal reader within 60 days to transfer the balance onto the card.<\/p>\n

    Benefits of registering your Opal card<\/span><\/h2>\n

    A registered Opal card has your personal information linked to the card. This means you can:<\/p>\n

    • Protect your balance<\/strong>\u00a0– You can block your card if it becomes lost or stolen, so no one else can use your funds.<\/li>\n
    • Transfer the balance to another Opal card<\/strong>\u00a0– If your Opal card becomes lost, damaged or stolen, you can transfer the balance to another Opal card.<\/li>\n
    • Set up auto top up<\/strong>\u00a0– Registered cards can be set to automatically top up when your balance becomes low, so you don’t need to remember to top up manually.<\/li>\n

      Reading your Opal activity statement<\/span><\/h2>\n

      Your Opal activity is a record of the transactions made with your Opal card. It shows your trips, journeys,\u00a0top ups\u00a0and\u00a0adjustments, so you can keep track of your spend, check you paid the correct fare and use the statement for tracking business travel for tax purposes.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      It can take up to 48 hours to show all activities\u00a0and balance on the website activity statement.<\/p>\n

      If you haven’t\u00a0tapped on or off, the origin or destination will be ‘Unknown’ and you will be charged the maximum ‘default’ fare. This is recorded as an incomplete journey, which means it doesn’t count towards your\u00a0weekly travel reward.<\/p>\n

      You can recognize any Opal transactions, such as card top ups, on your bank statement if \u2018TfNSW\u2019 and \u2018Opal\u2019 is listed in the transaction description.<\/p>\n
