Pennie is the official online marketplace made possible by the State of Pennsylvania and the top private insurance companies to provide affordable, high quality health insurance plans to Pennsylvanians. Pennie is the perfect mix of public and private entities collaborating to create a safe, trusted insurance marketplace.<\/p>\n

Representatives from the\u00a0Pennsylvania Insurance Department (PID)<\/strong>, the\u00a0Pennie Health Insurance Marketplace<\/strong>, and the\u00a0Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS)<\/strong>\u00a0celebrated the beginning of the open enrollment period today at Maria de los Santos Health Center in Philadelphia to highlight that\u00a0Pennie<\/a>, Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace, is now open for Pennsylvanians to enroll in high-quality health coverage for 2024. This annual Open Enrollment Period is the time when Pennsylvanians can compare quality health plans at the lowest costs through Pennie.<\/p>\n

Pennie’s Open Enrollment Period<\/span><\/h2>\n

Pennie’s Open Enrollment Period\u00a0began on Nov. 1<\/a>, and the deadline to enroll in coverage that will start New Year’s Day is Dec. 15.\u00a0 Plans and prices change every year, so anyone who needs coverage should review their options even if they have looked before. Anyone currently enrolled in Pennie should make sure their family size, income, and contact information are up to date. Enrolling in coverage is the best way to make sure you are protected in 2024.<\/p>\n

“The Philadelphia region has more people without coverage than any other part of Pennsylvania. This means that more people are missing out on important medical care to prevent and manage serious illnesses, and more people are at financial risk if they get hurt,” said\u00a0Pennie Executive Director Devon Trolley<\/strong>. “Having health coverage means protecting your health and your wallet. We encourage any Pennsylvanian without health insurance to start the new year with the peace of mind that comes with having coverage.”<\/p>\n

Pennie is the only place where Pennsylvanians can get financial savings to reduce the cost of coverage and care. Currently, 9 in 10 enrollees qualify and save over $500 a month on average.<\/p>\n

Can I Enroll in coverage outside of the Open Enrollment Period?<\/span><\/h2>\n

In order to enroll into Pennie coverage outside of the annual Open Enrollment Period, you must experience a\u00a0Qualifying Life Event (QLE). A QLE is a change in circumstances that may make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, during which you may enroll into coverage through Pennie.<\/p>\n

Examples of common QLEs include:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Loss of minimal essential coverage like job-based coverage or Medicaid<\/li>\n
  • Change in household size (e.g. birth of a child, marriage, divorce); and<\/li>\n
  • Change of residence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If you are enrolling into coverage through Pennie for the first time, please create or log into your Pennie account and click \u201cStart a New Application\u201d to begin. Once your application is completed, click \u201cConfirm Event and Shop\u201d to report your QLE and enroll into coverage.<\/p>\n

    Can I edit my application after submission?<\/span><\/h2>\n

    If you need to change or update information on a Pennie application that has already been submitted, click the \u2018Edit Application\u2019 button on your member dashboard and click on the section you wish to change.<\/p>\n

    Note: You should always update your application within 30 days of experiencing a change in circumstances to ensure you continue receiving the correct financial assistance you are eligible for. Any changes you make may impact your eligibility for this and other programs.<\/p>\n

    Coverage for Self-Employed Individuals<\/span><\/h2>\n

    You can enroll through Pennie if you’re a freelancer, consultant, independent contractor, or other self-employed worker who doesn’t have any employees. You’re considered self-employed if you have a business that takes in income but doesn’t have any employees other than yourself, a spouse, or a family member.<\/p>\n

    Make sure to apply and enroll in coverage through Pennie during Open Enrollment, which takes place\u00a0November 1, 2021 \u2013 January 15, 2022<\/strong>: By submitting a Pennie application, you\u2019ll find out if you qualify for:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Financial assistance to help pay for health coverage and care. This will be based on your income and household size.<\/li>\n
    • Free or low-cost coverage through Medicaid (Medical Assistance or MA). If you have children, you’ll find out if they qualify for coverage through\u00a0Medicaid or CHIP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Self-employment income and Pennie savings:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      • When you fill out a Pennie application, you’ll have to estimate your net self-employment income. Eligibility for financial assistance is based on your\u00a0estimated net income for the year you’re getting coverage, not last year’s income.<\/strong><\/li>\n
      • If you leave a job for any reason and lose job-based insurance<\/strong>: You can buy an insurance plan using a Special Enrollment Period. You have\u00a060 days<\/strong>\u00a0from when the insurance ends to enroll.<\/li>\n
      • If you have income that’s hard to predict<\/strong>: You can apply with your best estimate of what you expect to make for the year. Your savings will be based on that estimate. When your income changes, you can update your application to adjust your coverage and savings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        You can choose from several categories of coverage from Pennie, from plans with low premiums that mainly protect you in worst-case scenarios to plans where you’ll pay more each month but less out-of-pocket when you access healthcare services.<\/p>\n
