Windows 10<\/h3>\n

When your PC is plugged in, you might see a status message that says your PC is charging slowly or discharging when you hover over or select the\u00a0Battery\u00a0<\/b>\u00a0icon on the taskbar. This might\u00a0happen if you\u2019re using a charger that didn\u2019t come with your device. To speed up charging, use the charger and cable that came with your device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

  • The charger isn\u2019t compatible with your PC.\n

    Note:\u00a0<\/b>Some USB chargers, such as micro USB and USB-C chargers, use a proprietary charger. Therefore, your PC might only be able to use a charger from your PC manufacturer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n

  • The charger isn\u2019t powerful enough to charge your PC.<\/li>\n
  • The charger isn\u2019t connected to the charging port on your PC.<\/li>\n
  • The charging cable doesn\u2019t meet the power requirements for the charger or PC.\n

    Notes:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

      \n
    • A PC with USB-C connectors has higher power limits than a PC that doesn\u2019t charge using a USB-C connection. USB-C can support up to 5V, 3A, 15W. If the connector supports\u00a0USB Power Delivery, which is a standard, it can charge faster and at higher power levels.<\/li>\n
    • To get the fastest charging time, your PC, charger, and cable must support the industry standards. Your charger and charging cable must support the power levels that the PC needs for the fastest charging time. For example, if your PC requires 12V and 3A for charging, a 5V, 3A charger won\u2019t be the best for charging your PC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n

  • Use the charger and cable that came with your PC.<\/li>\n
  • Make sure you’re connecting your charger to the charging port on your PC.<\/li>\n

    When battery saver is on, your PC temporarily turns off some things that use a lot of power, like automatic email and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and apps you\u2019re not actively using. Using battery saver is the easiest way to extend battery life.<\/p>\n

    Select\u00a0Start<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0System\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Power & battery<\/b>. If you want battery saver to turn on whenever the battery falls below a certain level, select\u00a0Battery saver,<\/b>\u00a0then choose the battery level you’d like.\u00a0To turn on battery saver now and leave it on until the next time you plug in your PC, select\u00a0Turn on now\u00a0<\/b>in Power & battery settings, or select the\u00a0Battery\u00a0<\/b>icon in the notification area, then select the\u00a0Battery saver<\/b>\u00a0quick setting<\/p>\n

    Change display settings<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Adjust some of your PC’s display settings to help extend battery life. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
    Set a shorter duration for an active display.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0System<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Power & battery<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Screen and sleep<\/b>. For\u00a0On battery power, turn off my screen after<\/b>, pick a shorter duration.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Reduce your display\u2019s brightness.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Settings<\/b>>\u00a0System\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Display\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Brightness<\/b>. Clear the\u00a0Change brightness automatically when lighting changes<\/b>\u00a0check box (if it appears), and then use the\u00a0Change brightness<\/b> slider to set the brightness level you want.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Reduce the screen refresh rate.<\/td>\nA higher refresh rate will provide smoother motion on your display, but it also uses more power. If you want to lower the screen refresh rate, select\u00a0Start<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Settings<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0System\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Display\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Advanced display<\/b>.     Choose custom graphics options for an app.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0System\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Display\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Graphics<\/b>. Under\u00a0Custom options for apps<\/b>, select an app, select\u00a0Options<\/b>, then choose\u00a0Power saving<\/b>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    Set a shorter duration for when your PC sleeps.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0System<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Power & battery<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Screen and sleep<\/b>. For\u00a0On battery power, put my device to sleep after<\/b>, choose a shorter duration.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Change the background activity setting for some apps.<\/td>\nSome apps let you manage background activity. If you find that an app is using a lot of battery when running in the background, you can change the setting for apps that allow it. Select\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0System\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Power & battery\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Battery usage<\/b>. Under\u00a0Battery usage per app<\/b>, see which apps might be using more battery in the background. For an app that let you manage the background activity, select\u00a0More options\u00a0<\/b>(three vertical dots) >\u00a0Manage background activity<\/b>. On the settings page for that app, change the setting for\u00a0Let this app run in the background<\/b>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Put a lid on it.<\/td>\nMost laptops can go to sleep automatically by closing the lid. To set this, select\u00a0Search<\/b>\u00a0on the taskbar, enter\u00a0Control Panel<\/b>, then select it in the list of results. In\u00a0Control Panel<\/b>, select\u00a0Power options\u00a0>\u00a0<\/b>Choose what closing the lid does<\/b>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
    Choose a more efficient power mode.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Settings<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0System<\/b>\u00a0>\u00a0Power & battery<\/b>.\u00a0<\/b>For\u00a0Power mode<\/b>, choose a power mode that’s more efficient.<\/p>\n

    This option isn’t available on all PCs and depends on your PC hardware and manufacturer.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    Just press a power button.<\/td>\nMost PCs let you turn off your display, shut down, sleep, or hibernate with a press of the Power button.<\/p>\n

    To choose what the power buttons do, select\u00a0Search<\/b>\u00a0on the taskbar, enter\u00a0Control Panel<\/b>, then select it from the list of results. In\u00a0Control Panel<\/b>, select\u00a0Power options<\/b>, and then\u00a0Choose what the power buttons do<\/b>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    Choose different battery options for playing videos on battery.<\/td>\nSelect\u00a0Start\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Settings\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Apps\u00a0<\/b>>\u00a0Video playback<\/b>. For\u00a0Battery options<\/b>, select\u00a0Optimize for battery life<\/b>.
