NFL Week 9: Giants rule out Saquon Barkley; Panthers query Sam Darnold
Teams throughout the league are wrapping up their practise week ahead of the Week 9 slate. This weekend’s NFL games include the Cardinals-49ers, Packers-Chiefs, and Titans-Rams, to name a few. These games have one thing in common: injuries (or lack of players), which leads us to the topic of this post.
As teams submit their final injury reports for the week, keep an eye on this space to see who’s in, who’s out, and who’s status may change before kickoff. Here are all the injury reports and what they imply for Week 9.
Houston Texans at Miami Dolphins (-5.5)
TE: Texans Ankle, Pharaoh Brown C. Kirksey, Deshaun Watson (non-injury related), and LB J.J. Watt are all out. Hardy Nickerson (concussion) OUT
Dolphins:
It’ll be Tyrod Taylor and rookie Davis Mills for the Texans, with Taylor starting after missing last week’s game with an ankle injury. Watson has been ruled out for the ninth time in a row. After discussions with the Dolphins, the Seahawks decided against dealing Watson before the deadline.
The New York Giants host the Las Vegas Raiders (-3).
Raiders:
All of the following Giants players are currently out: RB Saquon Barkley (ankle), LB Lorenzo Carter (ankle), DB Nate Ebner (ankle), WR Dante Pettis (shoulder), and WR Sterling Shepard (quad).
Barkley has been ruled out for the second time this season by the Giants. Even though he passed the COVID-19 tests this week, his ankle injury means he won’t be playing in New York this weekend. Shepard is also out, and Golladay’s status is uncertain, so the wide receiver group is still severely depleted.
New England Patriots (-3.5) at Carolina Panthers
The Patriots have a defensive tackle. the left-footed Christian Barmore (LB) (ribs) Ja’Whaun Bentley, DL D.B. (hand) and Carl Davis Hands: Cody Davis the neck of Kyle Dugger, k On the mend: Nick Folk (knee) Injuries to Dont’a Hightower (ankle), Shaq Mason (abdomen), and L.B. Injured LB Josh Uche Injured: Kyle Van Noy (groyne), Jake Bailey (right knee), and N’Keal Harry (knee) are all a concern.
Quarterback Sam Darnold (concussion, right shoulder); cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III (toe); and guard Gary Harris Jr. Pat Elflein is a well-known and well-respected (hamstring)

QUESTIONABLE
There were restrictions on every Patriots player who was a doubt for Friday’s game. After being ruled out of practise earlier in the week, defensive back J.C. Jackson and tight end Jonnu Smith are now eligible to play.
When it comes to this game against New England, the status of quarterback Sam Darnold is still in question. A neurologist will have to give him the all-clear before he can put on his helmet and begin training. When Shaq Thompson (foot) was not listed with a game designation Friday, he is expected to return to the field after missing three games due to injury. However, Christian McCaffrey was on the practise field on Friday, but has yet to be added to the 53-man roster. Without McCaffrey, the Panthers have gone 1-4.
