“You may conduct a DL or ID transaction by telephone or by mail at www.dps.texas.gov. Check the site to determine if you must visit a driver license office or if you meet the requirements to conduct your transaction online.”

Conducting a DL (Driver’s License) or ID (Identification Card) transaction typically involves the following steps:

1. Determine the specific transaction you need:

  • New DL/ID: This applies if you’re getting one for the first time.
  • Renewal: This is done when your current DL/ID is about to expire.
  • Replacement: This is needed if your DL/ID is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Change of Information: This is required if you need to update details like your name, address, etc.

2. Check if you can complete the transaction online:

  • Many jurisdictions now offer online services for certain transactions like renewals or change of information.
  • Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or equivalent agency’s website to see what online options are available.

3. Gather required documents:

  • The specific documents needed will vary depending on the transaction and your location.
  • Generally, you’ll need proof of identity, residency, and possibly your social security number.
  • Check the DMV website for a detailed list of required documents for your specific transaction.

4. Schedule an appointment (if needed):

  • Some DMV offices require appointments for certain transactions.
  • You can usually schedule an appointment online or by phone.

5. Visit the DMV office:

  • Bring all required documents and any applicable fees.
  • Be prepared to take a vision test and/or a written or driving test, depending on the transaction.

6. Complete the transaction:

  • Follow the instructions provided by the DMV staff.
  • Pay any required fees.
  • You may receive a temporary DL/ID while you wait for your permanent one to be mailed to you.

ITAD is a separate requirement and must be completed no more than 90 days prior to the applicant taking the skills examination. ITAD should be completed after the 6 hour Adult Driver Education Course.

Any applicant who has taken a 6 hour Adult Driver Education Course and was issued an ADE-1317 Certificate, is required to view the ITAD program and receive a completion certificate before the drive test will be administered. The certificate must be dated within 90 days of the drive test. Applicants ages 18-24 who have been issued a DE-964 showing completion of a Teen Driver Education course (32 hours classroom, 44 Hours behind the wheel) are required to watch the 2 hour ITTD video.

The ITAD certification has an expiration date. The ITAD certificate is only valid for 90 days. If the applicant does not pass the driving skills examination within 90 days of the date on the certificate they must restart the ITAD program.

The ITAD video is broken up into three (3) modules that you can view independently. Each module must be completed in its entirety in order to progress to the next module.

A copy of the certificate will be e-mailed to the address used to create an account on the ITAD website. Additionally, you will be able to log in to the ITAD website at any time to retrieve and print your certificate (go to course, course overview, and reprint certificate).
