How To Activate Hey Google : How do I turn on Hey Google?
Your one Google Assistant extends to help you across devices, like Google Home, your phone, and more. You can access it with long press home on Android, Ok Google, or a squeeze on Pixel phones.
To activate the Google Assistant with the “Hey Google” command, follow these steps:
- On Android Devices:
- Option 1: Voice Activation (for devices running Android 8.0 and up):
- Touch and hold the Home button or say “Hey Google.”
- If the Google Assistant is off, you’ll be prompted to turn it on.
- Ask a question or give a command.
- You can also use this feature when your device is locked by saying “Hey Google.”
- Option 2: Assistant App:
- Download the Google Assistant app if you haven’t already.
- Open the app and ask your question or give a command.
- Option 3: Squeeze Gesture (Pixel Phones):
- Squeeze the bottom half of your Pixel phone (Pixel 2, 3, 3a & 4).
- Ask a question or give a command.
- Option 4: Power Button (Pixel 6 and later):
- Press and hold the Power button (Pixel 6 and later, including Fold).
- Ask your question or give a command.
- Option 1: Voice Activation (for devices running Android 8.0 and up):
- On Other Devices:
- Open the Google app on your phone.
- Tap your profile icon at the top-right corner.
- Go to “Settings.”
- Select “Voice” and then choose “Voice Match.”
- Turn on the “Hey Google” option under the “This Phone” tab
Start a conversation
- On your device, touch and hold the Home button or say “Hey Google.” If the Google Assistant is off, you’ll be asked to turn it on.
- Ask a question or say a command.
Tip: On devices running Android 8.0 and up, you can also talk to the Google Assistant when your device is locked by saying “Hey Google.”
Use “Hey Google” voice searches & actions
You can use your voice to do actions like search, get directions, and create reminders. For example, to see if there’s rain in the weather forecast, say, “Hey Google, do I need an umbrella tomorrow?”

- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app .
- At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initial Settings Voice.
- Under “Hey Google,” tap Voice Match.
- Turn on Hey Google.

- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app .
- Say “Hey Google” or tap the Microphone .
Delete “Hey Google” audio recordings
When you set up your Assistant to use Voice Match, the audio recordings created by your voice models are saved to your Google Account. You can find and delete these recordings from your Google Account.
- On your Android phone or tablet, go to myactivity.google.com.
- Above your activity, in the search bar, tap More Other Google Activity.
- Under “Voice and Face Match enrollment,” tap View data.
- Tap Delete all enrollments Delete.

Choose how to communicate with Google Assistant
- On your Android phone or tablet, say “Hey Google, open Assistant settings.”
- Under “All settings,” tap General Preferred input.
- Choose your preferred input.
- To say your question or command: Tap Voice.
- To type your question or command: Tap Keyboard.
Teach Google Assistant to recognize your voice
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Assistant app and say, “Assistant settings.”
- Under “Popular settings,” tap Voice Match.
- Make sure Hey Google is on.
- If you don’t find Hey Google, turn on Google Assistant
- Tip: If you’re signed in to a Google Workspace for Education account on your device and can’t turn on “Hey Google,” the admin might have turned off settings that are needed for “Hey Google” to work. Please contact your admin for more details.
- Tap Voice model Retrain voice model
- Follow the steps to record your voice.
