Gulf of America? ‘Gulf of Mexico’ will be renamed, according to Trump
On Tuesday, Donald Trump, the soon-to-be president, announced his intention to rechristen the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
A rebranding from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America is in the works. He spoke at a press conference held at his Florida Mar-a-Lago club on the Gulf of America, remarking on the beauty of the term. “And it’s appropriate.”
Instead of explaining when or how he would make the change, he just said that specifics would be provided at a later date.
“We’re going to change, because we do most of the work there, and it’s ours,” he said.
Shortly thereafter, in a social media post, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene announced her intention to formally propose a bill to alter the name of the waterway that extends from Mexico down the southern United States.
In 2012, a lawmaker from Mississippi put forward a bill to rename the saltwater body to the Gulf of America for “official purposes within the state of Mississippi.” He joked that the law was a hoax.
Why Trump chose to suggest changing the name at this time was not immediately apparent. As a “appropriate” name for the basin that approaches Cuba, he informed reporters that the Gulf of America “has a beautiful ring” to it.
A trade deficit with Mexico, fears about narcotics entering the country, and illegal immigration along the southern border were the reasons he cited for wanting to make the change, he said.
