England 246-10(64.3 overs) Vs India 72-0(10.5 overs)
The captain of the tourists, Ben Stokes, scored a furious 70 (including three sixes) after winning the toss and opting to bat.
In the opening match of the five-Test series, spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja each took three wickets for India.
After their top hitters failed to turn over starts on the first day at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, England’s frontline batsmen collapsed, and the team’s score dropped to 215-8 in Thursday’s opening Test against India.
After winning the toss, skipper Ben Stokes chose to bat and was on 43 runs at tea, while Mark Wood was on seven runs at the opposite end.
Ben Duckett (35 not out) and Zak Crawley (20 not out) batted aggressively for 55 runs in the opening stand, setting the tone for the exciting start that England would get under Ben Stokes’s leadership.

After the first eight overs, though, home skipper Rohit Sharma completely flipped the script by bowling with spin from both ends.
Ravindra Jadeja had Ollie Pope (one) caught by Rohit at first slip, while Ashwin bowled a non-turning ball that trapped Duckett leg before wicket.
In the following over, Crawley failed to prevent Ashwin from taking a low, falling catch after charging out to bat, only to have the ball drilled to Siraj at mid-off.
India regained control after lunch, despite a 61-run stand between Jonny Bairstow (37) and Joe Root (29), which stopped their decline.
With a delivery that was just slightly spun, left-arm spinner Axar Patel lured Bairstow forward before hitting the off-stump.
Root failed in his sweep effort against Jadeja and sent the ball soaring to Bumrah at short fine leg.
Tom Heartly, making his debut, scored 23, including a six off Ashwin, while Ben Foakes and Rehan Ahmed both fell for cheap shots.

IND vs ENG 1st Test – Post-Lunch session
After lunch, England lost wickets at both ends of the pitch, but they still managed to score 200 runs with 2 wickets remaining. Early in the second session, Indian bowled Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow out of the game, while Ben Stokes remained stuck at one end, trying to control his instincts.
In the second session, Ravindra Jadeja removed Jonny Bairstow, marking India’s first breakthrough. Tragically, Root met his demise shortly after he swept Axar Patel, cutting off his supply of oxygen. Out of nowhere, the Three Lions found themselves down to 137-6, and it appeared as though they would never score more than 200 runs. However, from one end, Stokes kept things running smoothly as Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley made excellent use of the long handle.
On the first day of the first Test between India and England, the visitors scored quickly after crossing 200 runs, thanks to skipper Ben Stokes and Mark Wood, who took his team to a total of 215-8 at tea.
