What do I need to know about Harry Potter before I start?
That’s entirely up to you! Although maybe you already know a few things. Yes, it’s all about a young boy called Harry Potter who finds out he’s a wizard and is invited to a school called Hogwarts to learn about magic. But we don’t want to give too much away, there are so many secrets and things to discover within the wizarding world that you’ll just have to find out for yourself!
And where should I get it from?
Easy! The Harry Potter books and audiobooks are available in all good bookshops, as well as online, and there are loads of different types to choose from including eBooks, audiobooks and illustrated editions. Enjoy this enchanting story in your favourite way.
Or why not borrow one from a library, or a willing friend or family member who has already had their wizarding education?
For now, here’s the first chapter for free to get you started.
How long is the book?
The first Harry Potter book is seventeen chapters long, or if you’re listening to the audiobook, that’s about nine hours. About the same length as nine lunch breaks or a long sleep on a weekend. But of course, you can enjoy the story at your own pace.
Is it scary?
Sometimes! There are many good wizards and witches in the wizarding world, but also a few bad ones – and they are definitely pretty scary. However, there are also plenty of wonderful and magical things at Hogwarts. And Harry will always be with you guiding you along the way!
Harry Potter
From the cupboard under the stairs to a whole new life at Hogwarts, Harry Potter’s journey has as many ups and downs as a Gryffindor vs Slytherin Quidditch match. When he starts at Hogwarts, Harry’s main worry is that he won’t be as good at magic as the children from wizarding families. If only he knew! Through time, Harry realizes just how important he really is. And through it all, Harry is always a true Gryffindor: brave, true, and loyal. And he always values friendship and love above everything.
Ron Weasley
Red hair? Hand-me-down robes? Must be Ron Weasley! Ron’s often overshadowed by his older brothers, but he might be the most lion-hearted Gryffindor of the lot… except when it comes to spiders. He’s an ace at wizard chess, always up for adventure and the best friend you could ever have – Weasley really is our king.
Hermione Granger
Hermione Granger is a Muggle-born witch who is very well prepared for her first year at Hogwarts (if the amount of reading she does is anything to go by). Intelligent, logical and a hard worker, she excels at the academic side of her school experience… though she initially struggles when it comes to making friends. However, after an incident with a troll in the girls’ bathroom, that soon changes. Alongside Harry and Ron, she has many exciting escapades during the year.
Draco Malfoy
Draco Malfoy is the icy blond Hogwarts student that Harry meets at Diagon Alley, although he doesn’t quite like him much. Harry soon learns that Draco looks down at other people a lot – being mean to Ron when he first meets him and even mocking Hufflepuff house! How dare he! Harry learns quickly not to make friends with someone like Draco, who ends up being sorted into his preferred house, Slytherin, while Harry goes to Gryffindor. But he still runs into Draco more often than he’d like – with the pair fighting over a Remembrall during flying lessons and Draco challenging Harry to a midnight duel! Why can’t people just be nice?
